Review/Rating - Presidential Candidate: Lindsey Graham

Lindsey Graham is currently a U.S. Senator from South Carolina.

On his presidential campaign website he alleges, "A leader ready to to [sic] be Commander-in-Chief from day one, Lindsey Graham’s upbringing began living in a single room behind the family liquor store, bar and pool hall in Central, South Carolina. He became the first in his family to graduate from college before embarking on a career in the Air Force and eventually winning election to public office."

Clearly being a member of the least popular branch of government is not an automatic qualification to lead the Executive branch...

This is a special [test] Review Project that is being created to allow collection and discussion of supporting and opposing data related Lindsey Graham and his status as a Presidential Candidate.

This website is still in development so this beta Presidential Candidate Review will focus on a single perspective and develop tools to maximize the effectiveness of each individual (while preparing a design to accommodate multiple ratings/reviews with various levels of detail and support).

Please provide comments and suggestions on how to improve reviews of this type below. Feel free to expand on the basic idea and comment on improvements for specialty projects like a reviews of existing governors, politicians, judges, et cetera.

Keep in mind that the review/rating process on iDrafted is meant to include discussion for productive change. This is not meant to solely provide a forum for attacking or supporting a candidate. Sources and documents should be provided and discussed with coverage of pros and cons of past actions plus some discussion of ways to improve past mistakes.

*this specific test "Review/Rating" project related to Lindsey Graham is being created as we already have documents related to that candidate.

It appears that Lindsey Graham is unfit to be President; and likely unfit to be an elected official of any sort.

Primary Reasons (see the Supporting Evidence and the Quotes/Correspondence sections):

1. He is failing to do the job he has already been elected to do. He denies that he (and the Congress) even have jurisdiction to act as a check on the Judiciary [which is actually a "Civics 101" fundamental duty of the Congress].

2. One of his primary issues is claimed understanding and ability related to Islamic Extremism and Terrorism, yet, he has done nothing to sponsor legislation that would improve domestic ability to discourage growth of Islamic Extremism; he displays no fundamental understanding of Islam and his solution appears to hinge on aggression and repression which in the long term equates to genocide.

3. He demonstrated a disturbing lack of executive resolve during the Confederate Flag "debate" where he swiftly reversed position to join a mob-style repression of Free Speech.

*I am posting using my name as there is a Presidential Campaign Project on this website for me; I would normally make this post on behalf of the website using the name "iDrafted" but transparency requires that I use my name so that people can consider any potential conflicts of interest. Of course, my "Campaign" is symbolic and designed primarily to advance tools for future independent candidates and Lindsey Graham's Campaign is solidly supported by established political networks (so I don't personally feel that there is a conflict of interest).

Prior to the War on Terror, Lindsey Graham had some appeal as a potential conservative candidate.

He was conservative but not rabidly Republican; i.e. he seemed willing to differ with his party on some issues.

Ever since 9-11, he seemed to wholeheartedly embrace and adopt President Bush's approach to Islamic Extremism and Terrorism. Unfortunately, Bush's non-realistic slogan of "hunt them down one-by-one" was a sound bite, not a realistic strategy. Graham's extension of Bush's sound bite is a formula for genocide because it targets "dangerous Muslims" in a way that would pressure practically every Muslim to eventually renounce core religious beliefs or join the "dangerous" groups.

Repression of the Freedom of Religion and [even "well-intended"] genocide disqualify Lindsey Graham as a current candidate for President.

Lindsey Graham's recent proud declaration that he had never sent an email clearly indicated his disconnect from reality.

Washington may be another world...

Lindsey Graham is clearly adept at Washington politics...

However, Washington D.C. clearly isn't a training ground to represent those of us from the real world.

Lindsey Graham avoids pandering to the Christian Right on the issue of gay marriage (in contrast to his typical stance on Islam and Islamic Terrorism):

"Marbury vs. Madison said it’s the job of the Supreme Court, the Judiciary to interpret the Constitution. The Supreme Court has ruled 5 to 4 that same-sex marriage bans imposed by states violate the 14th Amendment of the Constitution," said Graham. "It is the law of the land until the Supreme Court changes their decision or there’s a constitutional amendment overriding that decision."

[cnsnews.com/news/article/melanie-hunter/lindsey-graham-kentucky-clerk-we-cant-pick-and-choose-laws-we]

However, he displays a fundamental misunderstanding the role of Congress in checking the Judiciary. The U.S. Supreme Court would also be overruled by legislation passed by Congress and approved by the President (or with a veto overridden); two branches overrule the third; it would not require a Constitutional Amendment to override a U.S. Supreme Court decision except to the extent that it is a valid interpretation of the Constitution itself (& perhaps not even then -- the Federal practice of limiting Supreme Court decisions is largely untested -- most states retain absolute legislative rights to clarify high court decisions and the intent of the U.S. Constitution appears compatible with that practice; see Article I, Section 8, Item 18).

Consider the portion of the Necessary and Proper clause that relates to Judicial Review:

"[The Congress shall have Power] To make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution ... all other Powers vested by this Constitution..."

The example of the power of Judicial Review which the courts seized for themselves as an implied power [vested by the Constitution] translates to:

"[The Congress shall have Power] To make all Laws [related to or proceeding from] ... Judicial Review."

Translated to English:

Congress has the power to makes laws related to courts and decisions of courts; to clarify or reverse the decisions of courts as they relate to laws; and to set requirements and limitations on how to interpret law and the Constitution.

*To believe that Congress, as the legislative body, lacks the power to overrule nine unelected Justices over interpretation of law when the Constitution specifically entrusts legislation to the Congress (and does not prohibit oversight of judicial interpretation) is ludicrous.

Thank God!!! Lindsey Graham has suspended his campaign for President.

It is difficult to imagine a person more unfit to be Commander-in-Chief. The follow-up support by Jeb Bush is disturbing:

"Nobody is more clear-eyed about ISIS than my friend @GrahamBlog."

[cnbc.com/2015/12/21/lindsey-graham-drops-out-of-presidential-race.html]

Lindsey Graham is dangerous because his views are so myopic as to make him blind and he passionately promotes extreme action without clear understanding; I don't oppose aggressive action when necessary but a realistic plan for victory and long-term peace is key. Hopefully we don't trade a Lindsey Graham landmine for a Jeb Bush landmine...

Lindsey Graham shifts support for the Confederate Flag "with the mob":

Graham: "It works here..."

[cnn.com/2015/06/19/politics/lindsey-graham-dylann-roof-confederate-flag-gun/]

Then, about two weeks later:

Graham: "The flag had to come down. And thank God that is has."

I personally sent Senator Graham letters and emails approximately once per week for the first half of 2015 (and once per month thereafter)...

The sole response [via a single letter] was a denial of reality via a false denial of jurisdiction.

Senator Graham simply refused to do his job:
