Campaign - Joey Berry for President - 2016

This website is designed to launch personal projects of all scales. There are few projects larger than a U.S. Presidential Election Campaign so we are creating a specialty Campaign Project for our lead programmer, Joey Berry.

Click Here to see the embedded Campaign Website.

[iDrafted.org/projects/2016/index.html]

*note- this website does not support any specific candidate(s) or platform(s). We are creating this Campaign Project to develop and adapt tools for independent candidates to seek office.

Please feel free to email or post suggestions about additional Candidate Projects [including for other community, local, state, or Federal offices].

We welcome input from people with experience in local, state, and/or Federal elections. This Campaign Project is being developed by non-professional politicians largely for use by non-professional politicians.

The hope is to eventually develop tools and models for a successful individual campaign that differs from the typical professional two-party model that currently prevails. Nevertheless, many of the challenges of traditional campaigns still have to be addressed.

Suggestions by experienced campaigners on everything from fundraising and advertising to organization and legal/compliance issues would be very useful.

Downloaded FECFile software to electronically file FEC required forms.

*even though I plan to run a campaign without fund raising, from my understanding the filing of quarterly reports is still triggered by the official filing as a candidate/committee for the Presidential Campaign.

I currently estimate that there is a 5%-10% chance that I could win the 2016 national Presidential election; there is about a 20%-30% chance that I am able to generate national attention to issues or comments in a way that will allow me or another independent candidate substantially greater chances of election (to the office of President, state Governor, et cetera) in 2020 and beyond.

Most people would consider those odds unrealistically high at this point (with my current resources and lack of public recognition) but I believe that social media and the current news cycle together with my plan of publicity (and my personal qualifications) justify my estimates.

After just about two weeks of public outreach, the campaign can claim a certain amount of global success...

Website Activity by Location
Screenshot of website activity.

*the photo graphically presents activity over the past week (but it should be noted that the activity is for the entire website and some Russian SPAM was present prior to the beginning of the campaign's public outreach); the website is primarily active related to judicial reform in North Carolina so global progress is clearly related to campaign efforts.

Despite substantial success in public outreach, we are having some difficulty transitioning website activity into social media activity (with only 7 Likes on the campaign Facebook page so far).

Facebook Campaign Web Page

Campaign Logo
[@JoeyBerry2016]

*Part of the issue is likely the rough development of the official campaign website; also, the official website being a subset of this website undermines the legitimate feel of the campaign (when the same campaign website would be possible at a more official sounding web address for just a few dollars but for now, we are sticking with the zero dollar campaign and not registering a separate domain name).

**I suspect that there is a second issue where people are hesitant to Like and promote a campaign which is not already widely supported; if this remains a major issue then future campaigns will need tools to overcome this barrier or we will remain forever trapped in a status quo, high fund-raising, corrupted political reality...

***We openly solicit communication, including critical feedback so it appears that a failure in our underlying message isn't the primary problem in developing and expanding our social media base; we have tried to time our social media outreach with projected momentum going into the LP national convention so we have to overcome any barriers to social media support swiftly or the campaign for the Libertarian nomination is likely to fizzle.

We are preparing the annual Public Financial Disclosure Report for OGE (U.S. Office of Government Ethics) which is due May 15th.

*The FEC apparently did not forward the disclosure that I filed last year [or OGE chose not to publicize it] likely due to our zero fund-raising tactic.

The initial Campaign Project is designed to be an ultra low budget Campaign with zero fundraising. The idea is to test social media and develop tools for a candidate to interact with the people (rather that talk at the people)...

This project should test the ability to create campaigns that have some potential for success based on personal effort and the power of crowdsourcing/communication while remaining below the $5000 expenditure threshold for mandatory registration with the FEC [Form 2].

Overview of the Candidate:

1. Conservative: supports smaller government.

2. Libertarian: emphasis on political and individual freedom.

3. Reform: primary focus on restoring and expanding individual rights and establishing accountability for all levels of government (especially for judges, lawyers, and police).

4. Promises: will not run for re-election as President in 2020; will focus on doing the job; will ignore short-term shifts in popular opinion while remaining a servant of the people.

Hopefully the formal Campaign project is available to the public soon. The political season is starting to get exciting with "Judicial Tyranny" an issue for conservatives and liberals.

Mike Huckabee claims "Judicial Tyranny" with the Contempt Order against Kim Davis (when she used her power as County Clerk to refuse issuing marriage licenses).

[cnn.com/2015/09/03/politics/2016-kim-davis-presidential-candidates-responses/]

A Judge in Tennessee refuses to grant a divorce until the U.S. Supreme Court grants clarity on defining and dissolving marriage; he refers to a "‘judi-idiocracy’ ... with its iron fist and limp wrist...".

[washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2015/09/04/tenn-judge-refuses-to-grant-straight-couple-a-divorce-because-of-gay-marriage/]

There is a fundamental corruption of the Judiciary which leads to oversteps by the U.S. Supreme Court. The overreach by judges and clerks of lower courts in reaction to the U.S. Supreme Court are symptoms of corruption. Rather than being a simple choice, both relate to Judicial Tyranny...

The solution is to bring accountability to the Judiciary and all of the Justice System (including judges/clerks, prosecutors/lawyers, and police) with focus on restoring individual rights and removing government from the minutiae of everyday life.

*I personally took two issues all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court to allow them the opportunity to address Judicial Corruption; they chose to not review the first issue under guise of "discretion" and the second issue is being obstructed by a clerk; in short, they have clearly remanded the issue of Judicial Corruption to [the Court of] Natural Law leaving it to me and the public to correct their deficiencies. My Natural Law appointment by the U.S. Supreme Court is one of the primary reasons that if elected, I would serve (and I wouldn't mind a paid position while I correct the Judiciary)...

It appears that several major Republican Candidates are clearly unfit to serve as President:

1. Lindsey Graham is misguided on Islam and Islamic Terrorism to a point where his view of "ready to be Commander-in-Chief on day one" equates to ready to extend a military policy whose end result is repression of religion and/or genocide.

[idrafted.org/main.php?id=12]

2. Mike Huckabee, Ted Cruz, Bobby Jindal, and Scott Walker have issued support for the jailed Kentucky clerk (Kim Davis) in a manner that shows ignorance/disregard for law or obvious pandering (and willingness to take advantage of and even promote mob mentality). Either characteristic makes them unfit to serve as President.

9-13-2015

Received a Request for Additional Information from the FEC.

[docquery.fec.gov/pdf/834/201509130300004834/201509130300004834.pdf]

The "required" depository (11 CFR § 102.2(a)(1)(vi) and 11 CFR § 103.2) was omitted from the filed Statement[s] of Organization for the Committee (Form 1); I listed the depository as "N/A".

11 CFR § 103.2 [52 U.S.C. 30102(h)(1)] appears to require the committee to provide a bank and open at least one checking account; since the plan of this campaign was to run with zero fund-raising for as long as possible, no bank/account was planned or opened for the committee (as zero funds have been collected). I will check with the FEC to see whether the exemption at 11 CFR 104.7 [52 U.S.C. 30102(i)] for best efforts applies or whether I will be required to open an inactive account and pay bank fees with personal funds to remain a registered candidate.

*note- The filing of Form 1 to create/register the Committee was required within 10 days of registration as an official (declared) candidate; the registration of the committee creates the requirement to declare a depository (with at least one checking account); since registration of the candidate (Form 2) isn't required until reaching $5000 in fund-raising or expenditures, it is doubtful that the law considered zero fund-raising campaigns (where registration is optional).

The technical point when a person is considered a candidate is a little unclear but since I filed an optional declaration of candidacy on 8-21-2015, I will assume that date as my threshold.

Using my initial date, I am approaching the 30 day limit for filing a Public Financial Disclosure Report:

"Once an individual is deemed a candidate for the office of President of the United States, EIGA requires the individual file an OGE Form 278 Public Financial Disclosure Report. An individual who becomes a candidate on or before April 15th of any year is required to file OGE’s Public Financial Disclosure Report by May 15th of that calendar year with the FEC.[5] An individual who becomes a candidate after April 15th must file OGE’s Public Financial Disclosure Report within 30 days of becoming a candidate."

I should have the annotated Political Courage Test completed by this weekend.

It only took a day or two to fill out most responses but it has taken a couple of weeks to get those hand written responses ready (and to allow a little time to review and improve the initial answers).

The yes/no portion of the test is too misleading without substantial clarification via the annotated sections; I also provided a percentage for the yes/no portion because practically no issue should be a complete yes or no.

Ben Carson expresses that he does not believe that Islam is compatible with the Constitution and he would not support a Muslim President. However, he might support Muslim members of Congress.

[nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/ben-carson-does-not-believe-muslim-should-be-president-n430431]

Dr. Carson appears to have things somewhat twisted as character rather than religion is a prime qualification for President and members of Congress are in a better position to impact day-to-day legislation...

His comments undermine his diplomatic potential with Muslim nations and groups if elected.

His comments show little faith in the U.S. Constitution which is actually compatible with all major faiths.

Dr. Carson does not fully disqualify himself as a candidate with his brief comments but he does show some serious weakness on diplomatic and international issues.

His comments on Islam show a common misperception that is counter-productive to containment and resolution of Islamic Terrorism and ongoing conflicts within the Muslim world. Just as his campaign website's comments on Vladimir Putin and Russia are counter-productive to diplomatic resolution with that nation (and intentional disregard or alienation of Russia is either pandering, obtuseness, or insanity). Just as issues with the Islamic world are not simple and one-sided, issues with Russia are not devoid of hypocrisy on our end...

From the Campaign website:

"Vladimir Putin’s Russia has become dangerously belligerent. It is actively destabilizing Ukraine, endangering Europe in the process and continuing to fuel destabilization in the Middle East. This newfound aggressiveness is a rising threat to the peace and security of the American people."

[bencarson.com/issues]

A President is not just the Commander-in-Chief, he is also the Chief Diplomat for the nation. Presidential Candidates must be aware of the impact of public comments.

Ben Carson is not a career politician which is refreshing. Unfortunately, he is moving dangerously close to disqualifying himself for the office of President on the diplomatic front.

*on the plus side, the campaign website now includes an "Ask Ben" page [bencarson.com/askben] which appears to be an attempt to have two-way communications with the public. Most career politicians focus on talking at the public rather than attempting to speak with the public so Dr. Carson deserves some credit on that front.

**the Candidate Projects and Campaign Sections on iDrafted.org are being developed with a primary focus on allowing two-way communication between candidates and the public (without the ability of Candidates to absolutely control the direction and feel of the conversation). In other words, iDrafted.org is being designed as a forum for Candidates to evolve as well as a platform for reaching the public with their message.

[docquery.fec.gov/cgi-bin/forms/C00584359/1026416/]

The report reflects zero contributions and zero expenditures as this is a planned virtual media campaign with an express goal of as close to zero fundraising as possible.

Hopefully I'm setting the stage for a ramp up in volunteer crowdsourced efforts and a potential for media and social media coverage closer to the election (with little to no fundraising requirements).

I'm considering campaign slogans. Currently, "Vote for the better candidate" is leading.

It reflects my personal belief that I am currently the best candidate and my willingness to support someone else if they emerge as a better candidate...

The goal of this campaign is not to gain power or personal status, it is to effect change/reform in our political system. Unlike most presidential candidates, I couldn't care less whether I'm elected; I'm not running for me; I'm running for our nation...

If elected I would serve - literally serve all of America. The President's job is to provide unified leadership AND to consider how each issue addresses the wants/needs of the group(s) affected by that issue.

There are currently two primary issues at the forefront:

1. Terrorism (mainly via the Islamic State - IS/ISIL/ISIS)

The practical issue of obtaining ballot access forces an independent candidate to consider an established 3rd party at this point (mid March through April of the election year).

I am strongly considering changing to registration as a Libertarian and specifically expanding this project to include 3rd party candidates as well as independents.

I contacted the Libertarian Party (LP) via webform to express interest in running as a Libertarian Candidate.

Within 30 minutes, a very helpful campaign specialist contacted me and provided an overview of their process/requirements.

Their process is currently very open and democratic which meshes nicely with the original campaign project.

*I reviewed the by-laws and the platform and I only noticed two potential issues: the platform is idealistic in some places where I am pragmatic and the official bias against the [aggressive] use of force could be distorted into a unrealistic pacifist worldview. To be clear, on an idealistic level I fully agree with the platform and I also completely reject war based on political or social goals (but I strongly disagree with the concept that war/violence must only be utilized when ALL other options are exhausted); I hold and plan to maintain a very broad view of self-defense and security.

** I am slightly concerned at areas of the platform which appear idealistic in conflict with Natural Law; the goals are noble for an advanced society but Natural Law will always prevail when something disrupts advanced ideals (and I personally believe that even idealistic goals should account for a reversion to Natural Law).

I had imagined that I would find a great deal of skepticism and/or resentment within some long-term Libertarians for the late entry into the nomination process. However, so far, I have found support and a refreshing openness (and a true democratic spirit).

Previously, (since I was old enough to vote) I had identified myself as an independent conservative with strong libertarian values. I now find that I was always a Libertarian with conservative values...

*I plan to continue this Campaign Project regardless of the outcome of the nomination process but I also plan to support the Libertarian Party regardless of the outcome of this campaign. In any case this project should eventually provide tools to help third party and independent candidates successfully run for public office.

The Campaign has shifted resources/priorities to account for the transition from an Independent run to seeking the Libertarian Party (LP) nomination.

We are preparing video presentations for State and Local conventions and specific messages for delegates. All videos will be made available for public viewing.

The biggest short-term challenge relates to the logistics of reaching out to the existing LP base, attempting to expand support for Libertarian ideas, and timing the social media promotion phase on a very limited budget.

*Currently our social media links are inactive (because effectively managing those pages would overwhelm our current resources & we prefer no presence to a bad presence). Once we expand our volunteer base within the Libertarian Party, we will fine tune the public face of the Campaign.

**The LP nomination process is very democratic and there may be some chance of getting the nomination without broader public support but the most likely key to getting the nomination is timing an upswing in momentum on social media to coincide with the National Convention.

The candidate introduction video (primarily for delegates) is shaping up fairly well. We are on track to forward copies as promised to state and local conventions who have inquired.

*A copy will be posted for the general public on the Campaign website as soon as possible.

I just watched the second half of the Presidential Debate on Stossel. I think the clear winner was the Libertarian Party. Congratulations to all three candidates on a fantastic performance.

I hate that my late entry into the Libertarian nomination process didn't allow me any opportunity to join the debate but I believe that my views were largely represented by at least one of the candidates excepting that I didn't hear anyone clearly state the primary principle which is the foundation of my Libertarian perspective: Everybody is entitled to live (both literally and figuratively) and our rights proceed from this concept - any government or social intrusion on the ability of individuals to live violates Natural Law and must be corrected if we are to have a free and prosperous state.

The social media links have been activated on the Official Campaign website and the first batch of videos has been uploaded to the campaign Facebook page; links to the FB videos are provided on Twitter (@JoeyBerry2016).

*With the zero fund-raising campaign, the video production process has so far involved two people and about $50 worth of video capable equipment (a basic tablet and a small digital camera). People who complain about money corrupting politics finally have a chance to see an uncorrupted message...

The campaign has started social media outreach with a nice initial response. We are still developing and uploading video/photo content...

We also attempted local media outreach with virtually no response; it is interesting the local media effectively supports status quo politics by failing in their fundamental duty to cover Independent and 3rd party candidates.

*There are 369 hits to "/projects/2016/" recorded (which shows substantial activity on the campaign website just about two weeks after the launch of public outreach from an absolute zero base).

As a zero fund-raising campaign, we have been very successful at initial public outreach; reaching thousands of citizens within just a few weeks.

We have not been very successful at converting awareness and supporters into social media promotion...

We plan to adjust the campaign website to outline Libertarian positions generally and to clarify how supports need to help a zero fund-raising campaign (for there to be a chance of success).

*We have noted some of the strengths and weaknesses of Facebook based campaign pages (for initial contact versus continued supporters); we are considering what tools we need on iDrafted.org (for future campaigns).
