Review - Hearthstone Game

Hearthstone is a free card game offered by Blizzard Entertainment based on their World of Warcraft universe.

[us.battle.net/hearthstone/en/]

Players accumulate cards and build decks to face off in one-on-one duels or a solitaire style duel against the computer.

With nine different character (deck) profiles and 30 cards allowed per deck, the combinations are virtually limitless.

Overall, the different character classes seem well matched for such a complex system. The primary exception is that the Rogue and Hunter classes are a mismatch on offense/defense to cost with a fairly basic deck. Those two classes have a disproportionate chance to draw card combinations that allow their opponent zero opportunity to win. Unfortunately, the winning combinations for those classes requires little skill or effort (only the right draws) so the reward for playing them is limited to a childish desire to win and the cost of playing against them is an annoying waste of time for other character classes...

There is also some inconsistency in how Blizzard applies special skills/abilities between character classes and cards. Additionally, many cards apply a random factor or a bonus that ties to the player already having an advantage which is detrimental to skill based recovery and exciting last minute reversals that would otherwise be possible.

Hopefully Blizzard will do something to balance the fundamental flaws in a very promising turn-based card game.

The tournament play is also complicated by Blizzard's continuous need to expand decks and cards...

Using the "Sorry" button repeatedly to indicate sarcasm and contempt for poor game design is funny against Rogues and Hunters.

Also, quitting Hearthstone rather than conceding is pretty funny. They have to wait through a turn or two and then they get a message, "Your opponent has left". They are robbed of any true satisfaction of victory because there is no way for them to know whether you left on purpose or whether you were disconnected accidentally.

Unfortunately, the type of people who play those classes may not be sharp enough to understand these tactics. I usually envision a spoiled, bratty eight year kid as the real-world opponent who chooses to play aggressive hunter or rogue.

To be fair, I have played one or two games where a Hunter did not stack his deck for typical attack combos and the match was good with some merit to the tactics and strategies of the other player; it just the other 99% of matches were a waste of time (and 100% of the Rogue match-ups).

They need play via deck subsets & a better matching or handicap system. The game has so much potential it has practically lost all potential...
