Current Event - Confederate Flag Protest = Christiansburg High School Student Suspensions
According to recent articles, over 20 students from a school in Virginia have been suspended for wearing Confederate Flag Symbols.
Student organizer, (Senior) Houston Miller, is quoted as saying, "I feel like I should have the right to wear whatever I want, and I'm standing up for this."
Obviously, students shouldn't be allowed to wear "anything" they want but there is a valid argument that repression of the Confederate Flag is repression of valid speech. The Confederate Flag has historic and symbolic positive meanings in additional to the negatives that were hyped after the recent Church shooting in Charlestown.
A spokeswoman for the school also issued a suspect statement on the new school policy: "Continued racial friction suggests that lifting the ban of this particular symbol would cause significant disruption at the school."
It appears most likely that the new ban is the source of disruption and racial tension, if any...

Demonizing and repressing the Confederate Flag is not a positive development for Freedom of Speech...
It is not a positive development for our national values...
It is a form of surrender to those few who embrace the worst meanings related the flag while depriving everyone else of all of the positives.
Effective Free Speech is about overcoming difficult issues instead of repressing them. As a nation we appear to be moving in the opposite direction which encourages not resolving difficult issues for a short-term [false] gain and much greater long-term problems.
